Indications for HBO Therapy

Guidelines Used by
The Center for Hyperbaric Medicine
The Center for hyperbaric Medicine currently only
treats those diagnosis recognized by
the
Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society.
Medicare, Medicaid, and most health insurers and
managed care plans recognize hyperbaric oxygen
as medically appropriate therapy for the thirteen
qualifying indications listed below. For insurance to
reimburse for hyperbaric oxygen treatments, HBO
must be part of
a clinically acceptable plan for
emergent or adjunctive treatment of
an indicated
condition. These indications
include :
·
acute carbon monoxide intoxication
·
decompression illness
·
gas embolism
·
gas gangrene
·
acute traumatic peripheral ischemia
·
crush injuries
· suturing
of severed limbs
·
progressive necrotizing infections
·
acute peripheral arterial insufficiency
·
preservation of compromised skin grafts

·
chronic refractory osteomyelitis
·
soft tissue and osteoradionecrosis
·
cyanide poisoning
·
actinomycosis (refractory)
Private health care providers often pattern their
policies
on HBO therapy reimbursement from those established
by
Medicare. Occasionally, however, private health
insurance carriers have authorized reimbursement for
HBO treatments that are not strictly within the Medicare
guidelines. The Center for Hyperbaric Medicine
participates in many healthcare plans and will work
with you and your healthcare insurer to obtain the
necessary approval for HBO therapy whenever it
is
medically appropriate treatment for your diagnosis.
Providing documentation demonstrating that HBO
therapy can significantly accelerate the rate of
healing
(or contraction) of
complex wounds or
can reduce
the costs of
surgical management, increases the
likelihood of private healthcare insurers reimbursing
the costs related to
hyperbaric oxygen treatments.
